It’s been a busy month! Where do I start. Well, i left on the 7th after the club and thought the combo of drank + sleeping pill would knock me out for my 6am flight. Wrong! Instead I became hungover around 7am, and the flight seemed to last forever. Got in around 1:30 EST and spent the day with my family in the hometown of Rodney,Ontario (population 500). Passed out as soon as I had a moment to close my eyes. Also came to the realization that my family are super hickish, especially when we’re all together. Smokin, swearin and BBQ’in. Magical. Spent the next 2 days in Rodney, and my former stomping ground, London, Ontario.
Left London on the 12th and drove 7 hours to Montreal to pick up the gawd U-Tern. It was a pretty easy, but long drive to MTL. Our first gig together was @ Tokyo on St Laurent. Big ups to Jesse @ Lookout and Team Canada for linkin it. We wandered the street gawking at the beautiful women, searching for wi-fi, and eating mussels. We then rolled to find a hotel. Friends, if you’re ever in Montreal and need a cheap hotel, hit up St Denis and Ontario I think it is. Maybe Sherbrooke. It’s right on the corner and $75 a night. We then bounced to the venue and set up. Big ups to the homie Duvall who was playing techno and house in the white room. The night was really busy, anywhere between 900-1100 people through the doors taking full advantage of the amazing patios. Inside was quite honestly the toughest crowd I’ve played to in a while. It all worked out in the end though, we ended off the night with an hour of southern hip hop, and the place errupted - including the Toronto Argo’s who were in the house. Some of those guys are MASSIVE. Pause. After the gig we cold clocked our loot and crashed, as we had a long drive to Toronto the next Day…
On the 13th we needed some Wi-Fi so I could download some of that new NADASTROM crack to play that night in Toronto and get some directions. We met the dude Duvall again at Cafe Pi on St Lo and have some dope sandwhiches. Swapped some music and hit the road. Another 6 hour drive. Thank god for the Howard Stern episodes U-Tern had. Shit was comedy!! We rolled into town and called all the homies, letting them know what a monumental night it was going to be. Big Diggy, the D-Money bawwws gave us the best news of the day. Turns out we get the artists suite at the Drake, we just had to pretend we were Jokers of the Scene. Not a problem as we are some sneaky fuckers. We get into the spot, it had 4 beds, kitchen, TV and living room etc..we’re livin’ large!!…but then, none of the lights turn on. We hit the front desk asking him how to turn the power on. He gives me a funny look and tells me he’ll come check it out. We get back to the room and my brother figures out that almost all the light bulbs are missing!! WTF!! More on that later…Anyways, he brings up the bulbs, we eat some painfully mediocre Chinese and bounce to our first spot of the night, Circa. Peep the flyer:
So as we leave, we get caught in TORRENTIAL downpour!! We get to the club a little bit late as it took forever to get to the spot, traffic was insane and everyone was trying to cab. Circa is a pretty wild MEGA club that has amazing lineups every Friday, and we were hyped to open for Evil Dee. We get in there, and due to the weather everyone else is late, including patrons, so we head upstairs to set up. They are only opening our room and the main room instead of all 5. The thing is, they also didnt let people up until the main room was packed. I had my brother, sister, her boyfriend, their friends, my friends from TO and Van in the spot all wanting to come up. We played from 11-12 for the 30 or so people that were up there, until they opened the doors. From 12 on it was packed like that *snap*! And the crowd was really hype! We played hits from 12-1230 but then had to bounce out to the Drake for our other show. Big ups to Sonny from Lets Go to War, Eve and Mario from ADD, and to the friends that came through.
From there, my sister almost got hit by a cab, and we took the soaked trip back down Queen St W to hit the drake for this:
This was the night i was most hyped for during this trip. Jokers are the homies and I really like what they play, plus I was really excited to get to play our new tracks, and other heavy bangers I so rarely get to play it seems. On top of that it was a NXNE event so we got alot of extra pub out of the gig. We brave the rain, run in and frantically set up and get started. We also finally have some time to breath and inhale…alcohol. Theres bottles and drink tickets everywhere, and trays of tequila and mixed drinks. Needeless to say we’re gooned in record time. Our sets are tight and really well received. We see sooo many homies and meet some new people and ‘internet peoples’ too. The big homie Johnny Hockin is there with the whole More Proof Collective - Big ups to all of them!! They did a Kid Cudi show there the next night. The homie A-Mac was in town representin. Also the man of Toronto Fathom was reppin hard too! Plus IQ-7000, a hilarious hollerboarder, and Geoff from the Drake. It was a stage party: (Jokers, U-Tern, Diggy, Moi)
Thanks to “White Girl” for the pic. Well shortly after this moment Jokers played a great set and the partaay continued. I should also add that all during our set my Brother, who isnt into the kinda music we play, was on stage, pumping his arms up and down on stage in a wife beater and wildin out. It was really funny…everyone must have been like ‘who’s that guy??’ haha. Later in the evening I went outside and saw U-tern and asked if he had seen my brother. He told me he had asked him for the key to go pass out haha. Anyways the rest of the night is a blur but a really really good blur. We left the club around 4:30 and heading back to our suite for an after party. About 20 of us get upstairs only to find this:
Haha my brother straaaight passed out. It looks like he just face-planted straight into the bed. Anyways, the party continued til about 7am, and made the next morning, and drive to Ottawa very, very tough.
5 Hours drive, 1 episode of Howard Stern, 2 Coffees, 1 Redbull and a big sigh of relief when pulling into Ottawa. We rolled right to NORML to link up with the dudes of the town Iggy Smalls and Mike from Kapacity. Big up!! We did some shopping and then hit the town for some food. We had sushi on the mind. Little did we know this was not the city to quest in. We ended up at a spot that was pretty nice, and damn expensive. The sushi was mediocre at best. We’re so spoiled in Vancouver. The wack thing is it cost alot, and took over an hour! We were late to set up and didnt have a chance to shower, so we had a bathroom shower at Helsinki. Funny, last time I played there I had to do the same thing. Anyways, the night was busy and packed with really cute girls. Shouts out to Anh, who really, really liked us! Thanks to Katherine, and the homegirl Jodi for comin through!
Heres the flyer:
Sadly, Drastik had to take a last minute gig in Montreal but we linked up with him the next day.
Then we rolled back to Iggy’s and had some beers, and watched this clip a few times (don’t know how to embed - tips anyone?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxN1zkQgKKA
This is the most professional use of pause ever!!! Oh, and next time you see U-Tern ask him what the worst thing about dating a really REALLY hot chick is? Trust me, ask him. Pause.
The next day the dude Drastik rolled through, and we mobbed down to this Hip Hop festival under a bridge. Iggy and Drastik almost died in a fatal car accident in front of us, but fortunately didnt (by inches). Then some of the most insane rain ever hit as we were parking. It lasted about 20 minutes before it thinned out enough to wade through the puddled grass. We finally made it under and ate some hot dogs and watched the B-Boy competition. Our homie Rory from Vancouver was actually competing co-incidentally. From there we rolled out to Montreal for our last show together before U-Tern had to head home.
Once we got to Montreal we headed over to Jesse from Lookout productions place. Good looks on letting us crash there homie! We got our shit together and heading out to meet Grandtheft from Team Canada for dinner at this bomb ass Portuguese chicken spot. Janno’s or something like that? It was AMAZING. We set up at Team Canada’s new club, The Blue Dog for Banana Split Sundaes. Similar in theory to the one in LA, theres a free keg on the dancefloor early on and great music all night. The night was a bit slow but we both got to play whatever the hell we wanted, and Aaron and Raph got us niiiicely liquored up. Great times, and good homies out too. Big ups Assaf, A-Mac (again!), Andrew, Tronstr, Wilson Hart, Hatchmatik, and there were others I’m sure but its 5:30 am here and im forgetting and rambling…
Oh, and remember the missing lightbulbs in TO? Well, i saw CL Scarr aka Sixtoo aka Rob Squire aka Megasoid’s Speakerbrusier that night and he came clean and told us they stole all the light bulbs just to fuck with Jokers, as they had the same suite the night before! haha
The next day GT came through and we had breakfast and swapped a bunch of tracks. Oh, and lost track of the time completely! We left way too late and raced off to an airport we didnt know how to get to. On the way we crossed a ’solid line’ in order to get into the right exit lane for the Airport connector. Surely enough there was a really kind cop there who wasnt hearing ANYTHING. That you officer Lavesque you dick head. Not only did you give me a TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY dollar ticket, but we in turn missed U-Terns flight, which cost another $300. FAHK! He ended getting on a connecting flight in Toronto which was cancelled, so he didnt get home until the next day. So wack. I drove 7 hours by my lonesome back to London to drop off the whip. I had 2 days to chill with my family and get ready for thursday, which was another gig I was looking forward to:
The next day I caught the bus back to London to link back up with my dude Gingy as he lined up a gig for me that night. Check for him, he’s a really talented young producer and an all around fun guy. Pause. Shouts out to Your Boy Brian for bein that dude. We all went out for dinner and hit the club which packed up quick. We then got some nachos and a bottle and played mostly top40 cuz thats just what kinda crowd it was. At the end everyone was wildin out and the sound was all distorted but it was a good night for sure. We then did some inebriated laptop track swaps and crashed out. The next day my amazing sister drove me to Hamilton where I stayed with my recently widowed grandmother at her new place. She was doing sooo well, it was great to see, and see her. We even went to the gym together.
And finally, the last day of the trip. I was so worn out by then and just couldnt wait to get home. My homie Murge from Victoria was in town and we were playing together at the Social that night. We met up at Red Lobster and got down on some great biscuits and seafood. We hit the gig and got a bottle and made quick work of it, and rocked the fuckin spot!! Murge killed it. The promoter Matt told me I played the best set ever there on a Monday but i dunno i thought i was pretty average but maybe I should learn to take a compliment haha…regardless a great night. Big ups to Cass and Mensa for rollin through!! And thanks to Your Boy Brian for holdin it down all night and feedin us a bottle back at his crib. (that last sentece sounded mad baby-ish). We rolled back to the hotel after and crashed. The next day I hit the transit to the airport and flew back. Big ups to Demoe for scooping me at the airport. HOME! FINALLY!
** and Western Canada, we didnt forget you, we have stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Golden, and Winnipeg all in the very near future!!!**
I wanted to do nothing but nothing for the next few days but I linked Curtis Vodka a show here on the 26th and on the 27th duty called we all rolled to Crookers @ the Plaza. Bam! BENDER!
The next night I played the Grand opening of Moejoes in Vernon for 800 people, pretty wild night. Monday was the Canada Day Jumpoff @ Moejoes whistler and that popped the fuck off too!
This Saturday im @ The Modern with Matty C, and again at the Modern on Wednesday the 9th alongside DJ Spider. Should be dope. Peep the facebook event here.
I cant believe I wrote all this shit. I cant believe you read it! haha
ps. I’ve spent the past 2 hours listening to the new mix from U-Tern, Body Work Vol 2. Shit is unreal! Watch for it really soon!
